Unicycle Hockey World Championships 1996 at UNICON VIII

For the second time in the history of UNICON, a tournament was included to determine the world champion in unicycle hockey. Held in a large gym of a brand new leisure center, the conditions were ideal. 17 teams from 8 countries (Australia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United States) participated.
Only Great Britain and Germany have teams that play regularly. Other national teams were formed especially for this event. The Japanese players had never played hockey before and they lost all their games. However, if they keep practising I have no doubt that it soon will be as difficult to beat them in hockey as it already is today in racing and artistics. A first indication that they enjoyed playing hockey is the fact that they bought a whole set of hockey sticks and took them home to Japan to practise.
Another remarkable team was the "Rest of the world". Led by the Australians, they recruited members from all over the world. Although they also lost all their games, they no doubt had the nicest tricots which were especially designed for this event. After the games, the team leader proudly called himself the "Captain of the World's Worst Unicycle Hockey Team".
After a lot of exciting games (sometimes fair and sometimes rough) two German teams reached the final: Bochum I and Bochum II. At that stage it was already decided to which town this year's trophy would go. Nevertheless, the spectators cheered on both teams by simply shouting "Bochum". They were rewarded with a technically excellent game in which team I beat team II 10:6.
